Internet Explorer FPSHOOK.DLL Error

Have you noticed that Internet Explorer is constantly loading or that there is an excess of Event Logs relating to FPSHOOK.DLL crashes? This is due to the Fujitsu Touch Screen interface drivers. This issue seems to primarily affect older models of Toughbooks. Follow the instructions below to prevent the DLL from loading.

Option 1: Prevent the Fujitsu Pad Scroll from Starting Up

Using Task Manager

  1. Press the CTRL, SHIFT and ESC keys at the same time.
  2. When Task Manager opens, click More Details.
  3. Click the Start Up tab.
  4. Scroll down to and click Fujitsu Pad Scroller.
  5. Click the Disable button in the lower right-hand corner.
  6. Restart the device.

Using Services

  1. Right-click the Start Button, left-most 4 square button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Click Computer Management.
  3. On the left-hand navigation tree, click Services and Applications.
  4. From the right-hand list window, double-click Services.
  5. From the right-hand Services window, find and right-click Fujitsu Pad Scroller.
  6. Click Properties.
  7. Change the Startup Type: dropdown to Disabled.
  8. Click Apply, then click Ok.
  9. Restart the device.

Option 2: Uninstall the Drivers and Disable the Touchscreen

Uninstall the Drivers

  1. Right-click the Start Button, then click Device Manager.
  2. Click the Human Interface Devices group.
  3. Right-click the Fujitsu Touchscreen device and click Uninstall.
  4. Check the Remove the driver checkbox.
  5. Click Uninstall.
  6. When the uninstall finishes, restart the device.

Disable the Touchscreen

If the Touchscreen begins reporting erroneous input, follow the instructions below.

  1. With the device powered on and logged in, slide the physical Power button for 3 seconds.
    1. This should release the cursor from the touchscreen input.
  2. Right-click the Start Button and click Device Manager.
  3. Click the Human Interface Devices.
  4. Right-click the Fujitsu Touchscreen device and click Disable.
  5. Restart the device.

Option 3: Rename the DLL to prevent it from being loaded

Finally, if the options above do no prevent the Fujitsu Touchscreen drivers from loading, follow the steps below to rename the DLL and prevent it from being called.

  1. Click the Windows File Manager on the taskbar, the manilla envelope icon.
  2. Click This PC.
  3. Click the Windows drive, generally the C drive.
  4. Double-click the Windows directory.
  5. Double-click the System32 directory.
  6. Find and right-click FpsHook.dll
  7. Click Rename and add .backup to the filename.
  8. If prompted, click Yes and enter the administrator credentials for the device.
  9. Restart the device.
