Installation

Downloading

The first step is to identify which version is required, then download the Microsoft SQL Server Express installer from the Microsoft Download Center. Links to the various SQL Server Express installers are listed below.

Installing

  1. Download the SQL Server Express Installer.
  2. Once downloaded, double-click the installer to run it.
  3. Follow the prompts to install SQL Server.
    1. SQL Server 2008 R2, 2012, and 2014:
      1. When prompted, click New SQL Server stand-alone installation.

      2. Accept the Terms, then click Next.
      3. If your machine doesn't pass all the tests, fix the issues outlined by the installer, restart and try again.

    2. SQL Server 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022:
      1. When prompted, click Basic.

      2. Click Accept to accept the terms of use.
      3. Click Install when prompted.
      4. If prompted, fix the issues outlined by the installer, then restart and try again.
